What it is and how it is observed
Pitru Paksha, the fortnight of the ancestors, runs from Pratipada to Amavasya of the dark half of Ashwin (purnimanta). On the tithi of an ancestor's passing, families offer tarpan and shraddha - pinda, food for Brahmins, cows, crows and dogs - in the Kutup, Rohina or Aparahna time.
How the date is fixed
Bhadrapada (amanta) Krishna Pratipada: tithi prevailing at Aparahna (fourth fifth of the day).
Drik Panchang counts Pitru Paksha from the Pratipada shraddha; Purnima shraddha is on the day before, and many calendars start the fortnight there.
