जीवित्पुत्रिका व्रत (जितिया) 2026

New Delhi, Delhi · IST

Jivitputrika Vrat (Jitiya) 2026 is on 3 October 2026, Saturday.

What it is and how it is observed

Jivitputrika (Jitiya, Jiutiya) is kept by mothers in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Nepal for the long life and well-being of their children, on Ashwin Krishna Ashtami (purnimanta). It begins with nahay-khay the day before; the fast itself is nirjala, without water, through the day and night, with worship of Jimutavahana and the Jitiya katha. Parana, breaking the fast, is the next morning.

How the date is fixed

Bhadrapada (amanta) Krishna Ashtami: tithi prevailing at Madhyahna (midday fifth of the day).

Dates follow Drik Panchang (Ashtami at midday; when it is at sunrise only briefly, as in 2023, the previous day). Nahay-khay is the day before and parana the next morning; regional panchangs (e.g. Mithila) can differ by a day.
